If you are interested in amateur boxing and feel you have what it takes to become a professional boxer we have gathered some information on how you can embark on this journey.
Becoming a professional boxer requires a lot of dedication, starting with joining a boxing gym, logging hundreds of training hours, and gaining amateur boxing experience. Key steps include securing a licensed trainer and obtaining a professional boxing licence (e.g., British Boxing Board of Control).
You will have to pass a rigorous medical examinations (including a MRI/MRA, HIV TEST), as well as securing a professional manager.
Steps to Become a Professional Boxer
- Join a Qualified Gym: Find a boxing gym with experienced trainers affiliated with England Boxing.
- Train Consistently: Spend at least 500 hours (roughly one year of consistent training) learning fundamentals, sparring, and building stamina.
- Build an Amateur Record: Fight in local and regional amateur tournaments to gain experience, prove skills, and get noticed by Managers and Promoters.
- Obtain a Licence: Apply for a professional boxing licence. In the UK, this involves the British Boxing Board of Control, requiring a, £1000 fee, medical examinations, MRIs, and blood tests.
- Build a Team: Secure a licensed Manager to handle bookings and contracts, and a Cutman for fights.
- Find a Promoter: Promoters are crucial for organising fights, building a record, and advancing a career.
Requirements and Considerations
- Medical Exams: Comprehensive medical checks are mandatory, including brain scans (MRI/MRA) and blood tests for HIV and Hepatitis.
- Financials: The process can be expensive, and initial professional fights often have low pay.
- Commitment: Professional boxing is a high-risk sport that demands extreme dedication, often requiring it to be a primary lifestyle and, initially, holding a second job.
- Skill Assessment: Before getting a licence, applicants may need to pass a gym assessment to prove they are ready.
Please always remember professionals start with 10-15+ amateur fights. This will expose or determine skill level and physical capability to become a professional boxer.
