When this film first came out I was not able to see it because I was still fairly young and had some strict African parents so there was no way I could hide and watch it on a Pirate (I am not supporting Piracy).
I think the film came out around the same time as Menace To Society I think this one grabbed people more as it was directed by the talented Spike Lee but also the fact it was not so much about the violence but the struggles of 3 young black men trying to make it out or survive the Ghettos of America. Some choose education, some choose sports, some end up in Gangs. It seems to be the normal way of life. As well as entertaining it had some emotional scenes and some memorable ones like when Ricky got shot! He was someone in the film you really liked but lost his life early with so much potential yet unfulfilled.
While some glorified the violence I took it as a film to learn from as I saw the ones that chose education and sports. So I threw myself into Sports and community projects so I could keep myself productive. But not everyone is fortunate with less activities for young people to do today and many falling astray.
My most memorable part of the film was when the main actor arrived at his Girlfriends house and started throwing his fists at thin air while she watched. It was kinda funny at first but as you grip the situation you start to understand that everyone has a breaking point! When you are surrounded by so much negativity it can be hard to stay focused on your goals. The negativity can just weigh you down and heat you up to boiling point. There was not really any sex scenes in this film but it was nice to just see a normal embrace as she comforted him and held him down… Aww
